Woolen nursing clothes

Winter is here – and so is the risk of catching colds, a nasty flu, or a nursing mother’s worst enemy: painful mastitis.

Mastitis can be contracted after having been exposed to cold environments, like nursing in a draughty room, or after light freezing, for instance after taking a winter walk with your sleeping baby. You will quickly recognize the symptoms such as fever and lumpy, warm breasts. Treatment is up to your physician to decide, but you can do your best to prevent mastitis by following a few simple guidelines.

First of all: Nurse your baby as much as possible, this is always a good idea, but make sure that your breasts are emptied after each nursing session, in order to avoid clogged ducts.

Secondly: Stay warm!

We cannot stress this enough. Staying warm will help prevent your ducts from clogging, and ensure a good flow. To do so, wear layers, and make sure that what you wear is made from quality fabrics such as wool or bamboo.

Wool is an extremely effective insulator. It breathes and keeps you warm at the same time, and if you feel damp, the wool will absorb excess moist and keep your skin warm and comfortable.

Like wool, our bamboo fabric is warm, and carries some unique anti-bacterial properties – the ultimate lifesaver for sensitive breasts!

Look below for some inspiration on how to stay warm during the winter months, with nursing dresses and nursing tops in wool, and nursing bras in soft bamboo:
