When you become a mother for the first time you can almost be sure to be bombarded with ever more vivid old wives tales on Breastfeeding. But what is up and what is down with these old myths?
- Myth no 1: ’If you are nursing to often, it is because you do not have enough milk’ – The truth is almost the complete opposite.
The rule is (with very few exceptions) that you cannot Breastfeed too much or too often – especially not in the beginning. It is the nursing that starts and increases the production of milk in your breast – so the more you Breastfeed the more milk will be produced for your baby. If you still do not feel that there is enough milk it may because your baby is not sucking right. Talk to your doctor or nurse for advice if you have any doubts on how your breastfeeding works.
- Myth no 2: ’Soft breast are a sign of no milk!’ – Nonsense !
When your body has adjusted to the needs of your kid, the breast will not be as tense anymore. You will see that your breasts are in sync with your baby’s rhythm – and only when your kid sleeps longer or you are away your breast will tense up again.
- Myth no 3: ’You must nurse in fixed intervals of 3-4 hours’ – Rubbish !
Breastfeeding at exact intervals is old-fashioned. Today we know better. Your baby is unique and so are you – and the needs vary for all of us. So you should find the solution that is right for you and your baby – and not listen to what was ’true’ back in the good old times (they weren’t really).
- Myth no 4:’Small breasts means less milk’ – Hogwash !
Shouldn’t we just leave it at that.
- Myth no 5: ’You cannot Nurse when your nipples are inverted’ – Gibberish !
Your Baby will suck so hard that the milk will properly flow no matter how your nipples look. If there should be any problems at all you should talk to your doctor or nurse – and the will help you find a solution.
